Senior Championship Restructure

Proposal A (One Year):

Senior Championship Group Stages 2022

• All current 24 Senior A & B teams in one championship

• Teams divided into 4 groups of 6 teams

• 2021 semi-finalists spread across all four groups

• Each group to have 3 teams that would be originally in Senior A grade for 2022.

• Each group to have 3 teams that would be originally in Senior B grade for 2022.

Senior Championship Knockout stages 2022

• Top teams in each of the 4 groups to quarter-finals and play Senior in 2023

• Preliminary quarter-finals to consist of 2nd placed teams versus 3rd placed teams from different groups. Winners advance to quarter-finals. All 8 teams are guaranteed to play Senior in 2023.

• Quarter-finals to be open draw, with a 1st place team playing a team from the preliminary quarterfinals.

• Repeat of group games avoided where possible.

• Semi-final open draw.

Relegation from Senior (9 teams)

• Teams finishing 6th (bottom) in each group will play Intermediate in 2023 (4 teams).

• Teams finishing 4th and 5th in each group will cross play.

• Losers will play Intermediate in 2023 (4 teams)

• The four winners will cross play in two relegation semi-finals.

• The two winners of those relegation semi-finals will play Senior in 2023.

• The two losers of those relegation semi-finals will play in relegation final.

• Winner of relegation final will play Senior in 2023.

• Loser of relegation final will play Intermediate in 2023 (1 team).

Intermediate/Junior Championship Restructure

Proposal A (One Year):

Intermediate Championship Group Stages 2022

• Teams divided into 4 groups of 4 teams.

• Beaten finalists from 2021, relegated Senior B team and two losing semifinalists from 2021 will make up one team in each group.

• The 2nd team of Senior clubs namely Castlegar, Clarinbridge, Craughwell and Turloughmore will make up one team in each group.

Intermediate Championship Knockout stages 2022

• 4 group winners straight to Semi-finals and will play Intermediate 2023.

Exception: In the event a Senior clubs second team finishes 1st they progress to the Semi-Finals but the place in Intermediate for 2023 goes to the next highest ranked non-Senior club team in that group.

• Semi-final draw open draw.

• Winner of Intermediate Championship 2022 promoted to Senior Championship for 2023 Championship in accordance with byelaw. i.e., provided they don’t already have a senior team.

• The second lowest placed non-Senior teams, in each group will play relegation semi-final, winners remain in Intermediate for 2023, losers play relegation final with the winners playing Intermediate in 2023 and the relegation final losers relegated to Junior for 2023.

• The lowest placed non-Senior club in a group will play Junior in 2023.

• The 4 Senior clubs 2nd teams will automatically compete at Junior A in 2023.

Junior Championship 2022:

• The structure of the 2022 Junior A Championship requires no significant change under this proposal.

Proposal A 2023 +

Junior Championship 2023:

• Under this proposal for 2023, the 5 Junior clubs competing at Junior A will automatically join the 4 teams from Intermediate who lose their playoff to form a new Junior grade. The winners of this competition will be promoted to Intermediate from 2023 onwards and represent Galway at Junior level.

• The remaining Junior clubs currently playing at Junior B, C and C1 will be given the choice to play in the new Junior championship or to stay at their current grade. This will be reviewed annually with them. It will not be possible to compete in both.

• All Junior Championship formats to be agreed once number of teams confirmed.

Senior and Intermediate Championship 2023 onwards: 16 team Championship format:

  • 4 groups of 4 teams, previous years semi-finalists one in each group (or 3 semifinalists and relegated senior team for intermediate Championship).

  • 1st placed team into QF.

  • 2nd v 3rd from another group plays in Preliminary QF

  • Preliminary QF winners drawn to avoid repeat pairings with group winners at QF stage.

  • 4th place team from each group play relegation semi-finals, losers play relegation final, with losers relegated.

  • Every team guaranteed a minimum of 4 games

  • Requires 7 rounds to complete.

Junior Championship 2022:

• The structure of the 2022 Junior A Championship requires no significant change under this proposal.

• The highest placed junior only team in Junior A promoted to Intermediate for 2023. (Will require a change in bye-law)

• 3rd placed teams play in relegation semi-final, losers play in relegation final with losers relegated to Junior in 2024.

Junior Championship 2023:

• The structure of the 2023 Junior A Championship requires no significant change under this proposal.

• The highest placed junior only team in Junior A promoted to Intermediate for 2024. (Will require a change in bye-law)

• 16 team Championship format:

• 4 groups of 4 teams, previous years semi-finalists one in each group (or 3 semifinalists and relegated senior team for intermediate Championship).

Knockout Stage:

• 1st placed team in each group into QF.

• 2nd v 3rd from another group plays in Preliminary QF

• Preliminary QF winners drawn to avoid repeat pairings with group winners at QF stage.

Relegation

4th place team from each group play relegation semi-finals, losers play relegation final, with losers relegated.

• Every team guaranteed a minimum of 4 games

• Requires 7 rounds to complete.

Junior Championship 2024:

• Under this proposal for 2024, the 5 Junior clubs competing at Junior A will automatically join the 4 teams relegated from Intermediate to form a new Junior grade.

• The remaining Junior clubs currently playing at Junior B, C and C1 will be given the choice to play in the new Junior championship or to stay at their current grade. This will be reviewed annually with them. It will not be possible to compete in both.

• The winners of this competition will be promoted to Intermediate from 2023 onwards and represent Galway at Junior level.

• Junior A, B, C & C1 Championships to cater for second, third and fourth teams of clubs.

• A mechanism to be decided to allow promotion from Junior A championship.

This is trialled for a 2-year period and then reviewed. (Will require a change in bye-law)

• All Junior Championship formats to be agreed once number of teams confirmed.

Championship Restructure Proposal C (Stand Alone Senior B):

Senior A 2022

• 12 Teams as per outcome of 2021 championship.

• 2 groups x 6 teams. 2021 semi-finalists drawn 2 in each group, open draw.

• Top 2 teams in each group qualify for quarter final places in Senior championship.

• Teams 3 and 4 in each group qualify for preliminary quarter final places in Senior championship.

All 12 teams play in Senior Championship 2023.

Senior B 2022

• 12 Teams as per outcome of 2021 championships.

• 2 groups x 6 teams, 3 relegated teams from 2021 championship drawn (max 2 in a group), remaining 9 teams drawn in open draw format.

• Top two teams in each group promoted to Senior for 2023, with top team from each group into preliminary quarter final for 2022.

• Teams 2 and 3 in each group cross play with both winners qualifying for preliminary quarter finals of Senior championship 2022.

(In the event of playoffs, games may be played midweek)

Senior Knockout:

• Preliminary quarter finals: teams qualifying from Senior A play teams qualifying from Senior B.

• Quarter finals: preliminary quarter final winners play teams who have automatically qualified to quarter finals from Senior A groups.

• Semi-finals: Open Draw.

Relegation

• Team 6 in each group play each other with loser relegated to Intermediate in 2023.

• 4th place team from each group play relegation semi-finals, losers play relegation final, with losers relegated to Intermediate.

Intermediate Championship 2022 onwards:

• The structure of the 2022 Intermediate Championship and onwards requires no significant change under this proposal, winners promoted to Senior B.

• 4th place team from each group play relegation semi-finals, losers play relegation final, with losers relegated to Junior A.

• Intermediate Champions represent Galway in Provincial and All Ireland series.

Junior Championship 2022 onwards:

• The structure of the 2022 Junior Championships and onwards requires no significant change under this proposal.

• All Junior Championship formats to be agreed once number of teams confirmed.
